Skidsremarks

The Skids also did a great cover version of Castles in Spain by the Armoury Show, Jobson's post-Skids band. I half expected a Big Country tune, but it was not to be.

Back Into the Valley

skids

The Skids, Dunfermline Alhambra Theatre. March 6th 2010.

Another comeback for the Skids this time as part of the Fifer Festival and the culmination of a weeks celebration of the works of Richard Jobson, as unlikely as that may seem. The Alhambra is a lovely venue, plenty of space and a good stage, facilities and sound system unlike many others.

The band did not dissappoint the hordes of fans, many of whom must have had stitches after a couple of trips to the moshpit. All the classics were in evidence although I could have done without the acoustic encores. A genuine sense of community seemed to pervade the venue as the crowd carried on songs after the band had finished, and then the band picked them up again.

Jobson is over fond of speechifying but the rest of the band frequently interjected to keep the whole thing down to earth, notably Bruce Watson's invocation of the names of Dunfermline street gangs of the 70's as he took the stage.

Albert Tatlock!

As promised. From the Skids Fan Gathering 2008, Dunfermline. Former Skids and Big Country guitarist Bruce Watson and his son Jamie doing an acoustic set before the TV Stars (see below).

A great night and the Albert Tatlock t-shirts were truly awesome.

Ahoy! Ahoy! Land Sea and Sky

Haven't had time to stick my own clips up yet. But here are the TV Stars from this weekend's Masquerade Ball, the Skids 2008 Fan Gathering at Dunfermline's Corner House Music Bar. TV Stars are three original Skids plus 3.

Actually my clips are of Bruce and Jamie Watson's acoustic set, should be up tomorrow. At least I'm in this one (one of the bouncing mass at the front.)

Happy St. Andrews Day

Here is a bit of a strange one for St. Andrews day. Richard Jobson got a Tartan Clef award at a recent awards ceremony hosted by music therapy charity Nordoff-Robbins (Scotland). Presented by U2 guitar hero Mr T. Edge who said "Stuart Adamson's guitar playing left me feeling wholly inadequate. He had a big influence on me" and "We tried as a band on numerous occasions to do something as good as Into The Valley." Aye, tried and failed mate.

Here is an all star acoustic performance of said Pars anthem courtesy of the Skids site.

The Absolute Game

Dunfermline's victory over Hibs to reach the Scottish Cup Final certainly took long enough. It took nearly 3 hours of football for either side to score. Against the odds it was the Pars with a cheeky penalty. And now on to Celtic in the final...they have already won the league, we are propping up the bottom and are likeliest candidates for relegation. What could possibly go wrong?

However the victory was foreshadowed. It was inevitable once Dunfermline legend's The Skids announced their reunion. It is the Skids 'Into the Valley' which heralds the entry of the Pars at East End Park and I managed to get tickets for their first gig for 30 years at Dunfermline Glen Pavilion.

Richard Jobson talked about the reunion in Scotland on Sunday.

"A campaign started among fans to get the band to reform for the 30th anniversary this year, but initially Jobson was against the idea. Bassist Willie Simpson and drummer Mike Baillie tried to talk him round. "'Meet us,' they said. 'OK,' I said, 'where?' 'Outside Woolies in Dunfermline.' I was like: 'Come on guys, we're not teenagers anymore. How about a cafe?'"
