So what's all that about, then? Any explanations? - I thought Salmond did his "my work here is done" thing and stode off into the sunset....

There's no way to know for sure. The reasons for Salmond's resignation and now his 'return of the king' comeback seem to have stymied the media and political opponents alike. SNP insiders probably have a better guess.

My own theory about his initial departure is that he got a bit sucked in to the Westminster club. He seems very comfortable there. I also heard him describe himself as one of the biggest anglophiles in Scottish politics. A good thing IMO, but could have made him rethink his position as leader of the SNP.

The reasons for his comeback seem clearer. The rival candidates for the leadership all had their problems, and I think most SNP members were thinking 'none of the above'. I believe it when Salmond says that the SNP rank and file deluged him with pleas to stand. And that probably appealed to his ego.

Salmond is now clearly the strongest candidate and should wipe the floor with Roseanna (Mike Russell is a no-hoper).
