It abounds, the splodgeness

Definitely a blast from the past. Splodgenessabounds played a comeback gig in Edinburgh to a crowd of punks 'n' skins of a certain vintage. I saw the series with that fool from Kiss, Rock School I think, and Max Splodge was his chaffeur. He lost favour somewhat when he mentioned the Splodge had more chart success in the UK than Kiss did. More recently they have developed an obsession with Ghengis Khan and have written a series of songs around the theme (e.g Mongols in London), Max has even had his DNA tested and yes, he is related to Ghengis.

Emmy the Great

Emmy the Great, originally uploaded by alister.

Emmy the Great Live at Edinburgh Cabaret Voltaire, 16th February 2009. A rising star for 2009 we are told, Emmy the Great play acoustic folky tunes with rather angsty lyrics. Check out the myspace link above to hear some examples. Cabaret Voltaire was certainly busy for a Monday night. I get the feeling that this artist will be a bit better in a few years time with more experience and perhaps less teenagey lyrics, although I liked the song about New Kids on The Block :

"My head hurts
I wish I'd never woke up
I feel worse
than when S Club 7 broke up
I hate the day
It hates me
So does everybody else".

Although the audience enjoyed the gig they weren't blown away and the lack of an encore was telling.

P.S I did like the anecdote about playing Leith FM and thinking it was called Life FM and was a Christian rock station

Here Comes the Bride

gedge, originally uploaded by alister.

The Wedding Present
Edinburgh Liquid Rooms 12th December 2008

When the Wedding Present come on stage and immediately launch into Kennedy you know all is right with the world. They don't do requests, they don't do encores. But they do deliver an hour and a half of top quality indie noise. I must confess that despite being a Wedding Present fan since 1986 I still forget the song titles, usually because they are called things like "you'll not get the benefit". The Weddoes were absolutely spot-on and even though I was hungover and tired and not drinking it picked me up straight away. Musically tight and very passionate, go and see the Wedding Present if you get the chance. There will be a youtube clip to follow once I sort it out.

The Sounds Live

The Sounds Live, originally uploaded by alister.

The Sounds live at Edinburgh Liquid Rooms 26th August 2007.

The Sounds from Sweden returned to Edinburgh last night. The band say they have been on tour for two years and I could believe it. I saw them a few months ago supporting another band and they have been back to Scotland since then. What is more they are clearly a band who have had plenty of practice with their stagecraft. Lots of presence, lots of personality and bouncing tunes. What more do you need?

The support act were good too, sort of a Boney M for the 21st Century. Didn't catch their name though so if anyone can enlighten me...

Update...They were called Dragonette!

Arachnophilia

Slint
Live at Glasgow ABC
August 20th 2007

Slint must be one of the most name-dropped bands around. Even support act Aidan Moffat (formerly of Arab Strap) said he had been waiting to see them for 18 years. It was the first gig for Moffat and his new band Aidan Moffat & The Best-Ofs. They played a short drummerless set which did nothing for me to be honest.

Slint are a funny band. They recorded an album 'Spiderland' which was regarded as a seminal masterpiece and split up before it was even released. Now, years later, they are back together. The gig was for ages 14+ but I never saw anyone under the age of about 20 there and most of the audience were old gits like me.

They played Spiderland in its entirety. It was fantastic to hear the songs played extremely loud and something of their eerie quality was captured. They finished off with a cluster of other songs.

Not an essential gig, but enjoyable. Sonic Youth the following night would have been nice too.

Duffer Patrol

You know you're getting on a bit when the next 4 gig tickets you have are all old band reforming. From the 70's...we have the Skids. From the 80's...we have The Wedding Present and Buffalo Tom. From the 90's...we have Slint. What's more the weddoes and slint are doing the old 'play the whole of classic album' thing.

I will kid myself on that I am at the cutting edge by pointing to the recent addition of some of my pictures at this very nice Guillemots site.
