Reds Strike the Blues

The Edinburgh People's Festival have launched a short pamphlet to mark the anniversary of the Russian Revolution. The pamphlet brings together quotes from well known political and cultural figures world wide, some from history but many written especially for the pamphlet. The publication follows on from the recent meeting which saw 250 turn out to hear Trevor Griffiths, director of the film Reds speak at an EPF sponsored event.

Here is a short clip of EPF chair Colin Fox introducing the event which was held at WordPower bookshop in Edinburgh.

Ballad of the Band

Was interested to come across a piece on the Guardian music blog by Creation records supremo Alan McGee about Lawrence from Felt and later Denim. He really is one of the greats of the indie scene. Coincidentally I had been along to a talk by Grauniad journo Will Hodgkinson last week where he brought up Lawrence. Unfortunately his drug habit has put an end to his musical output and he now lives in a hostel, which is incredibly sad. It seems that artists like Jarvis and Belle and Sebastian had tried to sort him out and get him support slots, but he tended not to turn up. It's tragic what heroin has done to some of our great artists, you listening Mr Doherty?

Right Here

Tribute albums can be pretty grim. Garage bands murdering the classics. But this tribute to the late Go-Betweens singer Grant Mclennan sounds great. You can hear the tracks on myspace.
