Independence

Pam and Rosie, originally uploaded by alister.

OK one for the road. This is from today's march and rally by independence first. The campaign is an all-party one for a referendum on independence. If the SNP are the biggest party in May we are in for a constitutional crisis whether they can form a government or not.

Was amused to see diehard unionists of the SWP joining the march surrounded by saltires and funny wee nationalist groups I had never heard of.

Amusing Title Goes Here

Rosie Kane and Tommy Sheridan both to visit Lebanon. Or as one wit on indymedia dubbed it "the liar, the witch and the warzone."

Dawson College

When the news broke last week of the shootings in Dawson College, Montreal, it sent shivers down spines in my household. This was for two reasons. Firstly a family friend works in the college. We called and he was ok, although he had been at work and had heard the gunfire.

Secondly it brought back memories of a terrible day in December 1989 when a crazed misogynist went into the Lécole Polytechnique de Montréal, separated the women from the men and shot dead 14 women. My partner had been in the college in the morning and was going to go back in the afternoon to see a guy about an Amnesty International stall, but managed to get him on the phone, so she didn't go in.

December 6th is still a day of remembrance in Canada and also a day of action against violence against women and we should remember it still.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

Nigel Blackwell of Half Man Half Biscuit on great form in this interview for a Tranmere Rovers fanzine. They are playing Edinburgh in October, proving that life isn't all bad.

interview: "One thing you share with Tranmere is that you've both been described by the geographically challenged as being from Liverpool. How do you feel about that? Happy to be lumped in with the Scousers or fiercely Wirral?

Being called 'Scousers' is purely geographical ignorance - if I know the difference between Kentish man and Man of Kent and Geordies and Mackems for instance then there really is no excuse for lazy journalists (whose job it often is to know these things) to label us thus. Liverpool is a superb place and I'm there probably once a week and if we were from Crosby say, then I could perhaps just about understand the tag (even though Crosby itself is a town in its own right), but Birkenhead is a fairly large place as it is (142,000 people?) and so there is never an excuse for this error. Doesn't bother me as such. I don't get annoyed - it's simply RANK BAD FORM on the part of the journalist.
Life has changed a lot in the 20 years since Back in the DHSS was released. (Pavements used to be for walking on, now apparently they're for parking on.) What changes particularly annoy you, and which ones do you like?

You've hit the nail on the head perfectly there! Parking on pavements. That is exactly how Nazi Germany started! Litter dropping should also be punished severely - and I do mean SEVERELY.

Also - make kids walk to school again - it's how we learned our social skills. Oh, and cube more Mini-Motos. too noisy for a start before we get on to any law-breaking agenda. And can I watch..?

And instruct Bus Drivers to 'cheer up for Christ's sake'.

Having said that, there is still just about (and I do mean JUST ABOUT) a basic underlying decency to society I reckon."

Alan Moore backs Council Tenants

Alan Moore talks about his support for the Northamptonshire Defend Council Housing campaign.

There is a limited edition print and t-shirt available from here.

alan moore poster

"It's in support of a cause run by Northampton tenants Norman Adams and Chris Pounds to raise awareness of council plans to transfer ownership and management of council housing to housing associations, which have received considerable criticism over the last few years. While the council has a budget to promote their position, opposing views have not. The sales of this poster will allow the campaign to promote an alternative viewpoint before the tenants vote."

Edinburgh tenants won their vote against council privatisation plans.

Mythical?!

deep fried mars bar, originally uploaded by alister.

The suggestion has been made that deep fried chocolate bars served in Scotland are mythical. If only this were true! We are not top of the heart disease tables for nothing you know.

Katrina One Year On

by Jordan Flaherty at Left Turn: "“It was frustrating and painful at first,” former mayoral candidate and lower ninth ward resident Greta Gladney recalls, referring to the people that have come to walk the streets around her home. “Before December, in order to see our own neighborhood, we had to ride on a tour bus, while contractors, insurance adjusters, journalists and police and soldiers could walk around there as much as they wanted. Politicians were using our neighborhood for leverage, to get more money from the federal government. But they don’t want the lower nine to be rebuilt, so the money they get from our suffering is not going to come to us.”

Driving through the lower ninth ward on any given day, you are likely to see scattered groups on guided or unguided tours, tourist-filled buses and vans filled with church volunteers or scruffy activists on bikes. People come to see the levee break - now rebuilt - and to view the general devastation - which is still very much present. In fact, until recently, bodies were still being discovered regularly, and few doubt that more remain buried amongst the rubble. Virtually no one from this large neighborhood has been able to return. Most of the area still has no electricity or running water. "
